Though it has not appeared that any particular advantage would result from the utilisation of "Maconite" insulated cables for our L.Tl wiring, it has on the other hand certainly appeared that such cables may afford a definitely better job than the present rubber insulated H.T. cables which we use. A quantity of H.T. cable to our requirements has therefore been obtained for experimental purposes. We have up to the present had two sets (one 40/50 and one 20 HP.) of H.T. cables made up with Maconita insulation, one of which is already fitted to chassis 12-EX, and the other of which will shortly be fitted to 9-GIII. In this particular case the insulating covering of the flexible wiring is of pure Maconita only. It is further intended that two more chassis (one 40/50 and one 20 HP) be also so fitted, for which purpose we have sufficient cable on hand.
We have been permitted to view the process of manufacture at the Ashbourne Road Mills, which in this, and similar cases, consists merely in exuding the Maconita material directly on to the wire by means of a suitable machine, sufficient Maconita being fed into the machine to meet the requirements of the cable with a slight excess which exudes out of a small over-flow hole.
A sample of the cable in question is attached for your inspection.
