To HPS{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr}/RH.{R. Hollingworth} 800a & 406 Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/MHR.{M. H. Rigby}11/JH.10.4.40. 4.B.50. Chromium Plating of Brake Expander Units. Will you please arrange to have the R.R. hydraulic expander units removed from 4.B.50. The 4 plungers GB.4177 and 2 cones GB.4175 to be ground down 0.001 on the outside dia. only, and chromium plated to a thickness of 0.0005 to give the original dimensions. The wedges and cones of the Girling units GB.3805 (2 off) and GB.3819 (4 off) to be similarly treated, two of the latter being fitted to 4.B.50. The ends of the rods from the near equaliser should be reamered to 0.005 oversize and reduced in width to give 0.005 sideways clearance at the rear expander units. Clearances of shoe links to be increased as shown in sketch. The other Girling Units will be fitted to 9.B.V. when it comes into the shop, and the clearances front and rear treated in the same way.
