E.3/HP.17.1.36. re 25-30 Radiator with Sheet Metal Sideplates and Unbalanced Shutters. With reference to the above, we are preparing a radiator for 22-G-IV to go on the 10,000 miles test, which shall incorporate the unbalanced shutters and sheet metal side plates. It was hoped that we should be able to at the same time to test a thinner matrix but the gap in the top tank through which the mitred construction is at present soldered up is only 2.062 wide now, and as this would be reduced to 1.062 by the proposed 58 m/m matrix the Shops say this would be an impractical dimension for them to work to. We shall, therefore, reserve the thinner matrix for later when we produce a loose shell radiator for Wraith 2. We have checked over the detail drawings which have been produced for the sheet metal side plates, and made two modifications to facilitate production, one allowing a clear tapping hole for the side plate screws and the other cutting away portions of the bottom tank upper face no longer used with the method employed of assembling the radiator, and thereby positively arranging drainage for the side cavities. We have fixed up the dimensions for the tools for the unbalanced shutters, and in the meantime we are preparing particulars for the shutter centres which will require the front face of the radiator to be moved forward approximately .125 to make room for the wider part of the shutters. These instructions are being issued within the next two days, and we have arranged with By/Cgh{W Clough} to pass on the information immediately so that the radiator can be got ready by the time 22-G-IV returns from the coachbuilders.
