Report on chassis 8 EX after 2,500 miles.

E N G I N E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer}

The oil was drained out of the sump. The filter was taken out, and was found to be clean. Fresh oil put in.

Power.
Engine power has remained good throughout the test.

Lubrication of cylinders.
These are even and have normal lubrication.

Condition of cylinder walls.
These are in a very good condition.

Valves & fittings.
Improved lubrication to tappets to sch.634, otherwise to L.O.P. E.72113. Improved bottom valve spring washer HK.{Col. T. Harker - Sales}941 with more effective spigot for spring.
Oil holes on valve end of inlet rockers plugged, but so arranged to allow a very light leak of oil. These have functioned O.K. during test. Clearance between valves & rockers have remained constant. No.4 inlet valve - a tapping noise has developed. It is caused by the spring rubbing on the top washer. Lubrication is good. At times there is a tappet noise coming from the bottom of No.2 tappet guide. This is more noticeable when engine is cold.

Pistons.
Fitted with new Brico unlapped piston rings.
These appear to be in a good condition, & no definite knock is heard from same. There is a fair amount of carbon deposit on the piston heads. We have experienced no trouble with over-oiling.

Ignition Plugs.
"Lodge" detachable 200 type.
These have remained in a very good condition.

Periods.
There is a slight period in engine from 10 - 14 m.p.h., but we should consider this normal. On retard from 50 m.p.h., the engine is inclined to be a bit rough down to 40 m.p.h.

Engine gears.
These are normal. No rattles have developed.

Engine case.
This is free from any oil leaks.
