Robotham, Esq., GRY{Shadwell Grylls} - I have replied to this 6th October, 1936. Dear Sirs, SPECIAL 5.00 x 18 RIMS - PHANTOM 111. Following your discussion with the writer at Lilliehall on the 24th September, we have carefully considered the possibility of providing a 5.00 x 18 rim with a weight closely approximating the 4.00 x 18 International Standard as fitted on your present wheels. We are able to offer for test a rim which is produced in 10.G. special material in place of 8.G. The average weight saving over the 5.00 x 18 wheels already supplied would be 4 lbs. This gives a figure of 26 3/4 lbs. as compared with 26 3/4 lbs. - the average weight of your standard wheel equipment. To produce samples, the existing rolls will require modification. This work could be completed in 5-6 weeks, which anticipates the delivery promise we have received from our suppliers for the special material. After modification, the tools would not be suitable for the production of existing rims without extensive replacement. We regret we have no test data available on the performance of light weight rims, and assume that should our proposals be of interest, they would be subject to your extended test.
