CRANKSHAFT TORSIONAL VIBRATIONS. X6384 X8010

We attach herewith some interesting letters from The General Motors Corporation engineers which have been obtained for us by CWB. We were very anxious to know how and why the Harmonic Balancer operates which is fitted to the Oakland and Buick cars. The published descriptions of this device are not at all clear.

It will be seen from the attached letters that the Harmonic Balancer as used by the General Motors was anticipated by us in principle on the first G.1. engine although it was not fitted for the same purpose.

Major Carter of the Air Ministry recently published a paper explaining a similar device which he arrived at by theoretical investigation.

We are still carrying on our investigations with G.1. type friction damper; this can only be sandwiched in between F.10 tests. We hope shortly however to send through more information.

Mr. Summer of The General MXXXXX Motors has published a lot of work on Crankshaft Vibrations. He was, as far as we know, the first to use the scheme which we have copied for giving polar diagrams of the torsional vibrations of the crankshaft.
