For the attention of Chief Engine
Experimental Engineer.

Dear Sir,
Two items relating to valves in I.C. engines have been on my mind for some time and in these days it seems futile to keep anything that may be of value.
The first is the possibility of using a valve occupying nearly all the size of the cylinder bore, slotted on either side, the valve to rotate to either side and exposing a corresponding port on the cylinder head.
I presume this would bring about lubrication problems, so I would like to know the result of using an aluminium valve filled on the face side with a similar carbon to that used for the modern clutch thrust race.
Would this overcome the heat problem of the exhaust valve and at the same
