PRODUCTION OF RATIONALISED
SILVER PHANTOM BODIES.

The recommended procedure for dealing with the preparation for production of six and four light bodies, and the estimated time for doing the work so that production could commence as soon as possible after hostilities cease, assuming that the designs of both bodies have been decided, that they are the same back to and including the rear doors, that the construction will be Park Ward all-metal, and that the quantities produced will be approximately 100 of each type, are as follows:-

Make a full size lay-out drawing showing in colour the parts of the four light that are not interchangeable with the six light.

Make detaildimensioned drawings of fittings and parts that have to be made specially. Also outline drawings of all standard fittings giving dimensions of the parts that have to have special accommodation provided in the bodies.

Time 1000 man hours.

Make preliminary specification of materials while drawings are being made, which can be finalised after the first 6 bodies have been produced.

Time 160 man hours.

Make templates, formers, welding jigs for assemblies, panel beating jigs and main assembly jigs.

Time 1600 man hours.

As the formers are finished, sample parts should be made and built up into sub-assemblies by means of the welding jigs. These sub-assemblies, in turn, should be assembled in the main jig, the doors should be hung and fittings such as locks and window regulators checked for position and general working.

Patterns and jigs for glasses, windscreen, trim pads and cushion spring cases should be made after the shell has been assembled.

All patterns and jigs for parts that are bought out should be made in duplicate so that one of each is retained for checking purposes and the others passed to the suppliers.

The minimum time required to prepare for production, dealing with the work as set out above, would be 4 1/2 months.
