Rubber Buffer Downward Stop.

Having decided to abandon the shock damper on the trunnion, the need for a rubberised downward stop for the gun becomes more urgent.

We have investigated the possibility of providing an adequate buffer between the cradle and the Oerlikon Mounting, & we are forced to the conclusion that the rubber buffer is too near to the trunnion to effectively prevent fracture of the cradle should the gun be dropped from maximum elevation as might be the case should the gunner be wounded.

In our opinion the the only effective place for such a rubber buffer would be on the bar jointing the two armoured shields.

In this place it would contact the nose of the carriage.

We are suggesting this to the Naval Authorities and hope they will agree.

As the gun will exist on many occasions with the armouring removed we are providing a small rubber buffer between the cradle and the Oerlikon Mounting which will serve as a cushion device upon which to rest the gun but will not under these circumstances suffice in the case of the gun being suddenly released from maximum elevation.

Our proposals are shown on L.118 the original of which is attached to Ra/WH's. copy of this memo.
