Mr Claude Johnson from F.H.R.

The quietness of Napier brakes may be due to oil upon them the same as the Lanchester.

The central brake in the Napier car may be quite different because the back axle has less torsional elasticity which will not allow the central to vibrate so much. Theirs is a revolving axle (i.e. not with shafts for driving only which are necessarily thinner and more elastic.) I much favour the extra elasticity that we have but wish we could friction damp it which is not convenient.

F.H.Royce.
