position when used in hot countries and if it is possible to get some of the exhaust heat away from the dynamo, I think it would be advantageous. While on the subject of heat, we find that the battery gets very hot and I believe some of them will fail due to the high temperature. The spare battery which we bought out here is made by Paul Gadot of Levallois and we find that the pitch filling on the top of the cells has melted and run down on to the plates. Also this has caused the covers of the cells to drop down. We have had the cracked cell case of the Exide battery patched up but do not know whether the repair will be permanent or not.
The mileage recording part of the speedometer has broken down and we find that this part of the instrument is of very poor design. If you take one to pieces you will see that alteration must be made to ensure its reliability. Our trouble is that the worm which is attached to the top of the revolving magnet has come adrift and when you see how it is attached you will not be surprised.
The spring shackles of the front spring are very slack and we are today taking up the end play. We also find considerable wear on the bushes and pins. One bush is worn right through and we are replacing it by one from a broken spring. it is the rear end bush of the near side spring. These shackles have been very well greased every 1000 miles and also protected by leather covers which were full of grease. I think it wise to send out a spare set of shackles, pins and bushes when you send the spare top spring plates, previously asked for.
