x4429. REC'D JUL 1.1 1930 RHS/MGL.7.30 To BY. {R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from ROY. {Sir Henry Royce} C. to mox. C. to RG {Mr Rowledge} C. to Hs {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} C. to SPT --------------- Now we have small initial supplies of S.L.V.Steel on the ground, but unfortunately can get no more for at least 3 weeks, it is especially important we should conserve such supplies to the utmost. The object of this note is to ask again if we shall be safe in issuing H.R.Crown Steel - of which we have big stocks in the form of Forgings or Bar, approximating £1000 in value - for Inlet Valves on both 20 HP. and 40/50 HP. Chassis. Will you kindly let us have an early reply, as it is especially necessary to conserve the S.L.V stock in question until more can be forthcoming, if we are to maintain the output of Chassis, Aero Engines and Aero Spares. It is quite understood we are barred from using H.R.Crown Steel on the Aero Engines; and for these, both Inlet and Exhaust Valves, S.L.V and S.L.V only can be used. You will recollect Firths have taken up the attitude that until we can definitely show them that our failure with Chassis Exhaust Valves in H.R.Crown Steel is due to the Valve Steel, they are accepting no liability; the net result being, as stated above, we have £1000 worth of such Steel, in the form of either Forgings or Bar, in our possession which we could issue to the Shops. Incidentally I see in this week's "AEROPLANE" (Page 1206.A) Firths have a full page advertising their H.R.Crown Valve Steel and emphasizing the fact that it was used by the Rolls Royce Company in the Schneider Trophy Engine.
