Bailey - Chief Engineer} c. to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} HIGH SPEED STEERING WOBBLES. 457 K8240 We have been investigating the relative merits of various spring strengths with regard to high speed wobbles. We find that if we remove 3 leaves from a 1150 lbs. spring, wobbles are definitely worse. If we employ 1350 lbs. springs with three reversed leaves on the top, there is less tendency for wobbles to occur. We are investigating the value of reversed leaves. They would appear to increase the initial deflection of a spring for a given load and its rating (behaving in a similar manner to set-up springs in the side steering tube). The big Bentley was equipped with springs having leaves above the top leaf. It occurs to us that a spring of this type would be better equipped for dealing with braking torque, the load on the front end of the main leaf being partially taken by the extra top leaves.
