As you are now considering the design of petrol tanks, I asked H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} to make the fullest inquiries in regard to different forms of petrol pumps which are now used, as it had been considered that it might be difficult to provide an ingoing filter to the tank which could cope with the large capacity pumps.

From careful inquiries it has been ascertained that some pumps can supply up to 5 gallons in 20 seconds, but all pumps are made so that the amount entering the tank is entirely dependent on the speed at which the handle of the pump is turned.

It has been appreciated by the suppliers that pumps must be capable of adjusting their flow for the filling of small cars which have quite small apertures for filling their tanks.

All "S" officials are strongly in favour of having a strainer at the entrance to the tank if this can possibly be arranged in any way whatever, and I have been asked by them to place this matter before you for your kind consideration.
