Test procedure for diagnosing explosions in a Phantom model's silencer by creating an adjustable air leak.

We suggest that the following simpe test be carried out on your Phantom - which at present is free from this trouble.

Disconnect the petrol feed pipe from the starting carburetter, the starting carb. can then be used as an adjust-able air leak by varying the position of the control between closed and fully open. The car should be coasted down a fairly long hill with throttle slightly open. By varying the air leak the correct mixture to produce explosions will be easily found. With the thottle slightly open, explosions will be continuous and violent, with the throttle fully closed one or two explosions will be obtained after each throttle closing. If the throttle is not a good fit, explosions will be continuous.

We agree that with a fully closed throttle one or two large explosions can take place, but we cannot recommend not allowing the throttle to close as a cure.

Our experience is that if a car will crash occasionally in the silencer with the throttle closed, it will do so continuously when the throttle is slightly open.
