Dear Sirs,

FOR THE ATTENTION OF MR. ROYCE.

We have pleasure in confirming the interview given by Mr. Royce to Messrs. Hulme and Midgley last week, in connection with the TRIPPE Auxiliary Lamp for use in fog, particularly.

We would emphasise here that the standard Lamp supplied by us, besides being a considerable contribution when fog conditions prevail, is also an adequate driving light for all normal speeds.

As the question of adequate head-lighting is not under discussion in connection with your Cars, but rather an auxiliary lamp for use in fog and adverse conditions, we make the following recommendations from our own experience and without having had a personal experiment with Rolls Royce Cars. These recommendations cover the requirements of all high performance Cars where the seating position and length of radiator, etc. makes fog conditions exceedingly difficult.

The Lamp should be mounted on the near-side of the Car, and as near to the ground as possible, with due regard to road clearance, etc. i.e. within 18 inches from the ground. The Lamp should be aligned at an angle to the forward direction, in such a way that the near-side edge of the beam is slightly less than right angles to the pavement. In this way, the outer edge of the beam will be giving enough ahead light to make visible any objects ahead, while still maintaining visibility on the near-side of the Car for the driver's use. Provided that the path of the beam is so aimed when fixing the Lamp that at no time does it throw higher than horizontal, we are confident that the claims we have made for the use of this Lamp in fog will be justified. Actually, the
