Re New PhantomCodename for PHANTOM I Steering.
----------------

Thn7/H27-8-26:

The latest information is that Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} has discussed the matter with R.{Sir Henry Royce} and he is quite in agreement with the methods whichwe have adopted, that is to say, wherever complaints of steering take place and they can be satisfactorily cured by fitting springs in the side steering tube, this is considered quite the correct thing to do. If, on the other hand, we have difficulty in satisfying the customer, it would then be necessary to fit the new worm and nut.

If, however, any occasion arises that a new steering is to be fitted, care must be taken that such steering is fitted by our own experts, and in no case should a nut and worm be despatched. For instance, it is far better to send a complete steering, if there is any doubt at any Depot, or any place where the car happens to be, unless it is known that we have a man fully qualified to fit a worm and nut.

I have instructed Hm.{Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs} to arrange with all our Depots to have a man trained at the Works on this important job, but of course there are isolated cases, such as Australia, and possibly Madrid, where it is not possible to train anyone. In such cases, a complete steering, whenever necessary, should be despatched.
