F.{Mr Friese} Hickling, Esq.,
Messrs. Ransome & Marles Ltd.,
Newark-on-Trent.

Dear Mr. Hickling,

We are rather interested in the latest New Departure Seal bearings for use firstly as a clutch thrust bearing and secondly as a flywheel tail bearing. There is a certain amount of policy resistance to using an American product. If we let you have such a bearing could you give it a run and having possibly proved the Makers claims, supply us with similar bearings at a not too exorbitant price.

The thin race N.D. Bearings that have a bigger ball size and hence load capacity for given external dimensions also interest us. We have run a satisfactory test of same in an American gearbox. Is there any likelihood of your standardising similar bearings in the near future so that if we used them they would not be special sizes at higher prices with delivery difficulties.

I seem to remember you once told me something about the Balor infinitely variable gear. "Low down" about same would be gratefully received.

Yours sincerely,

FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED.
