Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} X.4429. BY7/H. 6.5.27. ROAD SPRINGS. Referring to the 20 HP. road spring in connection with which the top plate broke during the trial running in France, where the plate was stamped with a large "J", I have instructed Messrs Firths on the subject, and they reply that they will fall in with my requirements, namely, to use small letters for their steel and other indicating letters and numbers, and further, they will keep the letter or number to be stamped, on the plate, between the holding down bolts at the axle and the centre bolt of the spring. We would like to have the fractured top plate to return to Messrs Firths for examination when it comes to hand. Incidentally, the letter "J" indicates the particular cast from which the steel was produced. Springs will all carry an indicating letter for a similar purpose. BY. {R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} | ||
