To Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} from Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Wyn. c. Mx.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Wyn.6/AP.29.9.37 In reply to Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}2/R.20.9.37, after discussion with the persons responsible for the different sections of the chassis, we give below the reasons for the various complaints you make and where possible, modifications to overcome same. BRAKES (1) The linings on this car are obsolete. New type linings are at present being fitted. Aluminium drums are fitted to this car but a set of cast iron ones are being made and will be fitted when available, also a set of Hancock shoes are being made. (2) We attribute the thumps to incorrect adjustment of levers and ropes. (3) The squeak you complain of is in the rear axle on all Wraith chassis starting from cold. Gry.{Shadwell Grylls} is investigating this. STEERING FJH.{Fred J. Hardy - Chief Dev. Engineer} says this is due to bad fitting of the horn button. A modified scheme is coming through to cure this. GEARBOX As the car has been in the hands of Mx.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} since your return, these complaints will be checked when the car again comes out of the Fitting Shop. CLUTCH This clutch has started to slip under full load. (1) Is being dismantled for examination, the geometry of the pedal movement is being looked into by MRC. (2) The flywheel on this car is standard. Additional inertia ring is fitted to 27.G.VI. ENGINE UNIT This is a Wraith II. unit and therefore obsolete. (1) Poor idling is due to obsolete type of camshaft which requires a large tappet clearance. The tappets have continued | ||
