To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} We are sending you 2 asbestos glands with which, when spring loaded, we are getting very excellent results. We do not know whether you would like to take the matter up with some of the makers with whom we deal and get them to produce a gland of similar flexibility to this. We also attach a gland which has not been run, to shew the alteration in dimensions which takes place under the spring load. The only reason why we are enquiring for any other material is because we think if the asbestos was impregnated with say lead or other lubricating compound it would promote less wear on the shaft.
