WATER PUMP GLANDS. x4590

Our present pump glands on the 20 HP. and 40/50 HP. chassis give us a certain amount of trouble. We have carried out some tests on glands to overcome the difficulty. We have tried various types of packings including cork, but by far the most effective gland is produced by using half a dozen turns or so of 6-ply (.150 dia.) asbestos rope impregnated with graphite. This material is/so soft that it beds itself to the shaft; it has been developed by the Works on the hydraulic shock damper gland. It functions satisfactorily with a spring load of 20 lbs., this gives automatic adjustment. We have tried single and double glands; we prefer the double gland.

Attached is a sketch of the modification which we have carried out to the existing water pump shaft arrgt. when conducting the experiments. This gave the optimum results.
