These we understand are caused by hot valves.

Do detonations, if allowed to exist for some time, result in pre-ignitions?- (Mr. Ricardo says yes.)

We imagine that valve erosion is caused by the motion of the valve while in a special condition caused by heat, or water, or steam.

If we can re-produce it at will, we can then find if it varies with different materials of valve, or seating.
