RECEIVED S.W. from EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} c. to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} X3426 AON 4 NOV 1921 Re. GEAR BOX FITTED WITH GROUND GEARS. --------------------- We have today tested a gear box supplied to us, to which has been fitted specially ground gears, which you pointed out to me you had put in hand some considerable time ago, in order to overcome our present trouble, and which we have just received. We have now tested this box, and as regards quietness it is certainly very good and quite above the standard we have been having for some time. (3rd & 2nd gears) From the results so far, the performance seems good, and I think we should try others with a view to standardizing this action, if we continue to have the same success. I also propose testing one of these gear boxes on the dynamometer for a good hard test on the gears, and to see whether the gear box fittings remain in good condition. If after the dynamometer test, the gear box is found to be in good condition, I propose using these gears on cars for delivery. Is there any objection to this? The impression as regards the performance of these gears so far is very good, and I am anxious that they should be pushed as much as ever possible. I certainly feel some such move as this is required in order to overcome the trouble we have been experiencing in obtaining satisfactory gear boxes during the past few months. EP.{G.
