An idea to save the oil flowing away from the suction opening would be to cast a wall on one side to allow oil to flow back, or similar means.

Return passes round the sides or if the sides are used it can have back-looking tube cast in, or inverted, riveted to bottom: need not be airtight.

Plan shewing flat bottom of sump.

This idea works without small openings.

Alternative schemes shewn.

Diaphragm.
Opening for suction.

An inverted strainer having naturally more area could be lower or smaller in dia. Central down looking pipe could be cast on or not whichever found to be better.

Die casting would be exact enough in diameter.

Enamel, or cork, or paper shellac joint.
Die cast cover RECESSED TO FORM passage, disc ground face, four screws.
Opening here.

Regarding the down looking pipe one feels that the dome would never be full of oil, but should the strainer become choked at the bottom the oil would mount up the gauze at the sides until it found some clean parts, then flow through, so that apparently it is neither much good or bad.
