87120. To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} re 27-EX and the Gearbox. Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}16/E2.3.32 Copy to WOr.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} After driving this car my views and I think also those of PN{Mr Northey} agreed almost entirely with your memo. on the subject to R.{Sir Henry Royce} I see in Rl/M24.2.32 he says "I quite agree that synchro mesh as being made is better than our epicyclic top" and he goes on to say that for some time he had not intended to recommend making the epicyclic gear as drawn but thought it worth while to finish it to the testing state. It is quite obvious that we could not sell a gearbox such as that fitted to 27-EX even if we got over the noise trouble. Such being the case it seems to me that we should stop spending more money on this box, i,e.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} take it off the car and make it standard. Then comes the question of what should be done with this actual car. I am inclined to think the right thing to do with it is to being it back to the standard Continental Phantom engine and let us have it for sale. You have 19-EX on which it seems to me you ought to be able to do all the necessary development work for the Continental model, and it is quite obvious from our sales of as big cars that we must cut down our expenditure. I believe the body on 19-EX is not the Continental type but I really think there is very little in this. Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} | ||
