Report on chassis 9 G.III after 5,726 miles.

ENGINE.

Power.
Good. Compressions even. Engine detonates & thus slightly on pick up.

Lubrication of cylinders.
Even & good after hard run.

Condition of cylinder walls.
These are in a very good condition.

Valves & fittings to L.O.P. R.{Sir Henry Royce} 51991.
We have had no trouble with these.

Pistons R.53503. with shrunk gudgeon pins & end piece to R.{Sir Henry Royce} 50861/2 & to L.H.O. 2009 - bottom bevel scraper ring made "A" shape.
We have not heard any gudgeon pin or piston knocks. Pistons appear to be O.K. from underneath examination. There is a fair amount of carbon deposit on heads, but we do not consider enough for decarbonisation.

Periods.
These have considerably improved.

Engine gears.
There is no further improvement since our last report.

Engine case.
We have got a fairly bad leak of oil from rear of flywheel. We have had the bottom half of engine case down, but are unable to account for the leak. The oil retaining screw does not appear to be fouling, & the clearance round same seems to be normal. The bedding of case shows XX at the two extreme ends of case, near flywheel, to be slightly less than elsewhere. Otherwise we cannot account for it. The leak does not occur when running stationary, but comes on when the car is on the road. We have also a slight leak of oil from crankcase filler & breather. This runs down the underside of same, the leak comes from the cap. The amount is approximately one drop per minute.
