X.3374. - RE CHASSIS LIGHTING & IGNITION SYSTEM

Referring to your notes R6/G111118 and R12/G111118 there is no Bijur system on the market at present operating at 12 volts which, we understand, is the voltage we shall use as standard for the car lighting system.

We believe that it is Mr. Hives' intention, in the first instance, to fit to 7 CA one of the pre-war type Lucas dynamos. We are in correspondence with Messrs. Lucas on this matter and they have offered us for trial a sample dynamo of their type E,575 which we think is identical with the pre-war model. Mr. Bailey has already sent you a photostat copy of a drawing of this E.575 dynamo received from Messrs. Lucas. If the new dynamo they send us is the same as the pre-war type, then it will be possible to carry out a bench test of this dynamo in the same way as we did for the large 40 lb. machine.

There can be no doubt that the weight of the dynamo operating on the Bijur system, including voltage controller, must be less than that of a machine operating on the Rotax Leitner system for reasons which you state. We think that we might perhaps ultimately adopt a machine on the former system, producing this ourselves.

Regarding lamps, we have sent out enquiries with the object of determining whether half watt lamps will be certainly available for this purpose. We are also sending out enquiries for various batteries with a view to finally choosing the best
