| HOTEL DE FRANCE, CHATEAUROUX, Indre. France. To. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} From. G.W.H. 3. S. I. SPECTRECodename for Phantom III. We have received your memo Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} I5/KW of 1.7.35, also a memo from Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Bwg.{J. C. Bowring} With reference to Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Bwg{J. C. Bowring}'s memo, he states that the yokes and the pivots were being over lubricated, prior to the Car coming over here. This was not so. The trouble being, as reported in my memo of the 30th June. The signs of over lubrication, was due to oil escaping and not going where it was intended to go. My report makes this clear. The O.S. pivot and steering arm ballend was dry. With regard to your memo, we have been looking into the matter re getting air to the Carburetters, more air under the bonnet etc., but under the bonnet is so packed, that there is hardly any space left to fit anything. Remembering previous tests, the removal of Engine side guards gave no results, front Engine tray gave no results. We asked some time ago, for two open slots to be left each side of the Radiator Matrix to let air in, as we found this was the only practical way of getting extra air under the bonnet, which would not affect the cooling effeciency of the Radiator, or having to pass more air through the Radiator. We can see your point that by increasing the effeciency of the Radiator, we should have more hot air under the bonnet, but the fact remains, that the present Radiator is not effecient enough under the conditions we have been running, and will have to be enlarged, or made more effecient. We don't understand why my scheme of the slots, either side of the Matrix is over-looked. The air passing through is controlled by the shutters, just as the Matrix is. The air for the Carburetter intake, could be supplied from the same slots. We intended to remove the Radiator grill, but our energies so far, has been with the test on petrol and oil in the clutch pit, Brake's lubrication, etc., The temperature tests, are now awaiting the rise in the atmosphere temperature, this having dropped due to storms. It is gradually heating up again. In our last report, we gave you a water temperature of I05°c, .......... | ||
