Contd: 2 Messrs Rolls-Royce Ltd. pleased to say we have now arrived at a point where we can produce these meter valves with rates of flow tolerance within plus or minus 20%, at present with a high number of rejects which have to be scrapped, but we hope to reduce this number in the future. We have also developed an improved testing apparatus, and we shall very shortly be able to test accurately 50 to 60 meter valves per hour. An alternative design of cartridge which we may adopt, subject to your approval, is shewn in the attached sketch. We shall be glad to have your comments on this. Coming now to the question of oil, we have no reason to believe that Castrol "R" would not give satisfactory results. This oil has a lower cold test than the Luvax oil, but also a correspondingly lower viscosity at higher temperatures. However, as stated before it should give satisfactory results if you decide to use it. The Luvax oil has been chosen as having the desired viscosity throughout all the range of temperatures which we normally have to contend with in this country. We take it you have satisfied yourselves that the Castrol 'R' does not gum up when lying in the bearing for some time, as this was a difficulty encountered when trying it in one of our own systems. With regard to the Luvax oil, we have taken up the question with our suppliers and asked them to reduce the congealing point to minus 15°F.{Mr Friese}, and experiments are in progress to achieve this end, and while we should, of course, prefer to have Luvax oil recommended, we shall be quite agreeable to your specifying Castrol 'R' either by itself or as an alternative. ? +15°F Yours faithfully, for LUVAX LIMITED.
