STRICTLY SECRET. COPY. BJ. from R.{Sir Henry Royce} c. to Mor., HY{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer}, DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} R4/M20.8.28. AMERICAN CHASSIS. During the period Mr. Burton has been at W.W. we have produced a central change mechanism which suits our 4 speed English box. This seems as near ideal as we know how to make it. The features are:- (1) Change lever rocks on ball joint; no sliding or external gate. (2) Interlock plate and reverse safety catch (necessary for four speeds.) (3) Preference given to change speed lever - i.e. longer to handle, nearer driver, than brake lever. (4) Would not cause any confusion to a driver used to 3 speeds, only difference would be in 1st and reverse. Also a coachbuilder's drawing has been made of the complete L.H. chassis. The pedals etc. seen nearly the same as for R.H. Mr. Burton has now arranged to leave for Derby and U.S.A. (Sgd) R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
