SECRET.

'INDIA' GEARBOX.

We wired you this afternoon as follows :-

"TESTS WITH INDIA FIRST AND SECOND GEARS HAVING NINETY DEGREE INCLUDED ANGLE SPLINES FIRST SPEED WORKS OUT".

The 1st. speed came out very definitely - it was impossible to hold it in by means of the change speed gear lever. The gears were unground and the splines on the shaft were milled, not ground, and the gear wheels were slotted.

The box is now being dismantled for examination to see if there is any obvious reason why this gear should come out.

This test was carried out on one of the standard diameter shafts. We also used the original ratio of gears. This was in accordance with the scheme of reducing scrap to the minimum.

We shall be testing tomorrow hexagon shaft and gears. The shaft is the larger diameter and the gears are the increased ratio.
