4-SPEED BOX. X.5310

I wired you yesterday regarding the above, as follows :-

"TO AVOID EXCESSIVE SCRAP CHANGE ONLY ANGLE OF SPLINES OF FIRST AND SECOND SPEED PINIONS TO 45º OR 90º INCLUDED AND TEST PROMPTLY WITH UNGROUND GEARS" ROYCE".

You will readily see that the object of this instruction is to avoid a considerable amount of scrap gearing and reduce it to the minimum of a new shaft with 1st. and 2nd. speed pinions modified so that the driving angles of the splines are increased to 45º

If we were at the moment to adopt the larger 1st. and 2nd. pinions it would involve the loss of 5 gears instead of 2. if we adopt the larger shaft, (for which there seems no adequate need) we should involve the loss of 2 more gears. If we altered the speed of the side shaft as suggested by Mr. Stent, we should lose another gear, so that the total loss would be very high. I do not think it is necessary. When you start up another lot of boxes we can reconsider it according to the experience we have obtained with this first batch, which I believe is 200.

R.{Sir Henry Royce}
