X.4273 - STABALITE COIL FOR GOSHAWK.

You will have seen R's note R2/M23.11.22 stating how much it has improved the running of 6-Gos.II by changing the coil to the 40/50 coil with stabalite case. We also have had tests in progress of trying to cause the 40/50 coil to break down in a similar way, and have shown that it is definitely better than any bakelite case coil.

It is considered, however, that some form of heat insulation such as a sheeting of asbestos composition should be instructed up to be put between the coil and the engine,(I note this is asked for in R's latest note R3/M23.11.22 knowing as we do that the stabalite will soften at the temperatures obtained. This is certain to keep the temperature down to some extent and may just be sufficient to prevent the softening taking place.

It appears, also desirable to replace the wax used to fill up the H.T. hole opposite the H.T. terminal by a solid plug, to prevent the running of this wax due to the temperature obtained, as has occurred. Apparently a bakelite plug can be used, as on the bakelite coils, the amount of disfigurement due to the different colouring being negligible.
