COPY To EFC. from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} 17th March X. 2981 - RE INDICATOR DIAGRAM APPARATUS E3/G17317. With reference to the above, you will recollect that we had a conversation concerning the details some two weeks ago. I attach herewith sketch No.LeC.743 which illustrates the principle of this mechanism. This is the original sketch and various alterations have been made upon it by Mr. Royce. I will proceed to describe these alterations :- The drive for the rotary valve will be taken first. Instead of the differential gear shewn on LeC.743, Mr. Royce wishes to use a form of epicyclic illustrated by the sketch:- [DIAGRAM TEXT] VALVE & ENGINE SPEED 22T CHAIN DRIVE 12T PAWL SLIP GEAR FOR ALLOWING EPICYCLIC CASE TO ROTATE 1/2 TURN CORRESPONDING TO 12 ORDINATES ON INDICATOR DIAGRAM 24 positions per Rev of Crankshaft. PER STROKE - ENGINE SPEED - Numbers on gears: 40, 48, 40, 44, 40, 48, 11, 12 I think you will find that the numbers of teeth shewn for the gear wheels allow of a reduction of 11/12. We then put in a chain drive to the valve which will drive it exactly at half engine speed. Well now, if we put notches on the outside of our Contd | ||
