re: CHASSIS 3.AZ.140 - Mr. BENHAIM

---------------------------------------

The owner of this car has on more than one occasion complained about the steering, stating that it joggled and wobbled and that the car lacked a feeling of directional security at high speeds. Apart from the steering he was very satisfied with the general performance of the car.

We carried out the only remidy which we know of vis :-

1°. Took out play in steering column (slack between cam and roller).

2°. Restored lost poundage (friction) on the ball end pads of the cross steering tube joints. The joints were attended to on several occasions.

3°. Examined the rear end of the side steering tube and per instructions contained in the last paragraph of your memo Hd{Mr Hayward/Mr Huddy}/SB{Mr Bull/Mr Bannister}4/HR.15.5.37.

The car was sent to us fairly recently so that we could again attend to the steering.

Upon testing the car over moderately poor roads, we found that the steering was far from being up to standard owing to joggles and steering reactions generally.

We effected the following work :-

Took the front buffer clearances (lower buffer to underside of spring housing), which were found to be :

n/s 13/16" o/s 9/16" (car empty -no passengers or baggage, but ready for road).

n/s 1/2" o/s 5/8" with 4 passengers.

In view of the above reduced buffer clearances we removed the G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp} 83692/8 1200 lbs. suspension springs and fitted G.84713/4 1300 lbs. springs which increased the buffer clearances to :

n/s 1 7/8" o/s 2" car empty.

n/s 1 1/2" o/s 1 11/16" with 4 passengers

If you agree that this is a true statement of fact, then we ought to issue a depot sheet
