Lovejoy Shock Absorbers

Over the weekend we have tried various combinations of Lovejoy shock absorber springs and valves in the front and rear of 39-JG and 69-JG and we have come to the conclusion that it is useless to pursue the matter further.

We have had, in 39-JG,

| 1st Stage Valve | Front 2nd Stage Valve | Front 2nd Stage spring | Rear 2nd Stage valve | Rear 2nd Stage spring |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Quick action | Solid | 40 lbs. | Solid | 40 lbs. |
| Quick action | Solid | 40 lbs. | Drilled | 100 lbs. |
| Slow action | Solid | 40 lbs. | Drilled | 100 lbs. |
| Slow action | Drilled | 40 lbs. | Drilled | 100 lbs. |
| Slow action | Drilled | 40 lbs. | Drilled | 40 lbs. |

69-JG

| | Front 2nd Stage Valve | Front 2nd Stage spring | Rear 2nd Stage valve | Rear 2nd Stage spring |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Quick action | Solid | 40 lbs. | Solid | 40 lbs. |
| Quick action | Solid | 40 lbs. | Solid | 60 lbs. |
| Slow action | Solid | 40 lbs. | Drilled | 100 lbs. |
| Slow action | Solid | 40 lbs. | Solid | 40 lbs. |
| Slow action | Solid | 40 lbs. | Drilled | 80 lbs. |
| Slow action | Solid | 40 lbs. | Solid | 80 lbs. |
| Slow action | Solid | 40 lbs. | Solid | 60 lbs. |

Before this we have tried 100, 80, 60 and 40 lb. springs in the front shock absorbers and came to the conclusion that our earlier condemnation of the Lovejoys was due to the makers supplying 100 lb. valve springs and quick-acting 1st-stage valves. This gives a pull of 450 lbs. (max.) on each strap. With the lighter valve springs the instruments are much better.
