re. 20-HP. Faulty Fuse Carriers.

We have had several instances in which the electrical system has been at fault owing to faulty connection of the fuse wire to the terminals of the fuse holder.

It is found that when wrapping the wire round the screw and tightening up the screw with a screw driver as is the usual practice, the wire gets trapped in the thread and is turned round with the screw, the wire itself then being stretched and broken. The breakage, however, is not manifest and the fuse holder remains in position without any apparent sign that the connection is faulty.

Our general practice in dealing with this and one which we are recommending to our Depots is that with these fuse holders the wire should be wrapped round the screw against the thread so that although when screwing up there may be a tendency for the wire to uncoil itself and become slack, this point is fairly obvious, and the wire is not torn or broken.

This is a point which we certainly feel could be attended to with advantage.

We feel that some consideration should be given as to more reliable means of making this connection such as the following:-

1. There should not be any thread portion on the screw where the wire wraps round.

2. The faces which grip the wire should be flat, the outside edges being bevelled off so as to avoid shearing the wire, as is inclined to take place at present.
