X.3612 - DOUBLE THRUST BEARING FOR GLEASON BEVEL GEARS.

The scheme which Mr. Day sent through of the double thrust bearing that would only necessitate a new thrust housing instead of the new thrust housing and propeller shaft, as the scheme we have standardised demands, has been returned to him from Derby, because they found that the propeller shaft which he shows on his scheme is not the standard one we use. It appears to us that we have got to face the fact that to fit the double thrust means new housing and propeller shaft. We have three axles running about fitted with this type of double thrust. We have taken them down and examined them and find that on all three there have been signs of the thrust washer creeping round. In order to prevent this occurring, we have fitted two Woodruff keys to hold the thrust washer. We have examined one axle after 200 or 300 miles running and so far it is good.

We are also continuing our tests with the scheme in which we use the journal bearing to take the thrust on the reverse. As we pointed out in our previous report on this, when we ran the car on the dynamometer, the nut holding the thrust washer screwed right off, first having broken the tab off the locking plate. We have fixed the thrust washer on this axle by means of two Woodruff keys & we have since run it for 10 hours on the dynamo-meter and examination afterwards showed that the nut was still
