tight and the washer had not moved. We are continuing the tests.

We think it is time a definite policy was settled as regards fitting the double thrust. We are having cars returned to the works in which the thrust bearing has failed and all that is being done is that the thrust bearing is being replaced with another identically the same type so that there is every chance of the fault re-occurring. Several months ago we stopped the works producing any more thrust housings or propeller shafts to the present design - they are simply using up stock which they had in hand. We recommend now that the works should start immediately producing the double thrust bearings but that we should adopt some scheme to prevent the thrust washer creeping. To fix it cannot possibly do any harm and as long as the thrust washer does not creep, no wear can take place. We might also make the collar larger on the shaft.

We recommend, if our tests prove successful, that we should use the scheme of the journal to take the reverse thrust for cars which come in for repair.

We should like to have Mr. Royce's instructions on this matter.
