Gearbox S.M. Sleeve Rattles.

Bentley.

With regard to the prevention of this trouble when starting from rest in 2nd speed, we suggest the addition of two locating plungers as shewn by N. Sch.4095 herewith, a print of which is attached to Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}' copy of this memo.

As far as we can see these plungers will have almost no influence on the operation of the synchromesh device, as after they have been lifted from their depressions by the rotation of the sleeve they will not return until the sleeve is again in the neutral position.

We think that if necessary the locating force of the plungers can be considerably increased without ill effect and that the angle of the plunger should be increased to say 45° as a maximum before increase of spring load is made.

If it is found that the plungers do not always pick up the depressions on returning to neutral, longitudinal grooves may be substituted.

We are also sending N. Sch.4099 which shows lightening of the sleeve and clutch cone to reduce the inertia.

We think that the plungers should be tried without lightened pieces first as it appears that they could be safely used on production without much testing, whereas the lightened pieces are weaker than standard and should, no doubt, receive endurance testing.
