On the side away from the connecting rod the exhaust is through a mushroom valve in the head. On the other side it is through ports in the cylinder wall controlled by the piston. 544,055 B.D.Scott. Multi-cylinder internal combustion engines for aircraft. An engine of the flat twin type has 24 cylinders, made up of four banks of six cylinders each arranged in pairs in opposition, each bank driving a different crank shaft. All the crank throws are identical. By this means the reciprocating parts and the cranks can be exactly balanced. The twin crank shafts of each pair of cylinders can be geared together to rotate in opposite directions to drive two concentric propeller shafts which can be displaced at will to vary the gear ratio.
