X.4021. WATFORD IS.12. MAGNETO NO.98034.

A copy of my assistant's report ref. WE.13. which was sent to you under cover of our EFC1/AD3.4.30 was sent to Messrs. North for their information, and we have this morning received a reply dated yesterday ref. CHK/VS.{J. Vickers} in which, after stating that they are pleased to note the good condition of the contact breakers and distributors, they express their regret that the bench test after type test of magneto No.98034 shewed irregular sparking in the fully retarded position. They further state that it is not possible to offer any suggestion as to the cause of this without making a full examination of the magneto, but that if we can conveniently send it to them they will be pleased to examine and report upon it without delay and return it to us as quickly as possible.

We have never been completely satisfied on bench test with the performance of this particular machine, and as you will remember it has been returned to Messrs. North once previously. It has never been as good as its companion No.98033 and we recommend that if it is at all possible we should comply with their request to let them have this machine back for a full examination, as by this means they may not only be able to improve this particular machine, but to discover some unsatisfactory feature which therefore can be avoided in any other machine which they provide for us.
