14th. October. 1940.

W.A.Robotham, Esq.,
Messrs Rolls Royce Ltd.,
DERBY.

Dear Mr. Robotham,

I have by me your letter of the 6th. October addressed to Captain Green, who has asked me to reply, as the questions raised therein deal with design and production.

I apologise for the delay in replying, whilst I had the matter looked into.

I quite appreciate your desire that the mountings should give satisfaction in service, in view of the design having developed by your Firm and that it is with a desire to help that you ask that your Firm should be responsible for prototype mountings.

I can also appreciate the position as regards the L.M.&S. Railway wishing to make modifications to suit their manu-facturing conveniences and, as the Order has been placed direct with them by the Admiralty, their natural desire to deal direct with the Admiralty officers.

Subject to your remarks, I think perhaps the best way would be for the Railway Co., to refer any questions to my Overseer, Eng., Commander Smith and, if he should be in any doubt, for him to confer with you direct or through me, depending upon the nature of the modification.

With regard to the last paragraph of your letter, it is hoped to be able to allot you one complete mounting in November.

Yours sincerely,

S.C.Whyham.....
(Eng. Rear Admiral.)
