X.3441 Extract from BY9/P14.7.21. X.3920 In regard to the further memo Wa{Mr Wallis}8/Go6.7.21, on front axles, before we could give this matter any consideration it will be necessary for us to have some evidence in the shape of damaged axles so that we can see to what extent the axle is damaged, and from that form some idea of the urgency of the case. One would imagine that if the roads are the cause of trouble the damage will be done at speeds all round about 20 to 25 miles per hour. All axles should show it, and the amount which an axle is out of truth would depend upon the length of time it had run. One would be inclined to imagine that if the axle does give way from the conditions referred to, the torsional effect would be most noticeable, that is, the pivot would be twisted on the axle itself.
