For the attention of Mr. Robinson.

Dear Sirs,

Referring to a matter discussed between Mr. Robinson and our Mr. Davis at the Show, viz. the breakage of the bracket carrying the electro magnet operating the dimming mechanism, we are sending per passenger train a headlamp with the bracket in question broken.

Personally, I am inclined to think that it is quite probable that the tendency to tear or crack is set up in producing the sheet metal piece itself from its development when the vertical plate carrying the electro magnet is punched out of the plate and turned up at right angles.

Secondly, there is too sudden a change of section at the point where the vertical web meets the main bracket at the point where the bracket is secured to the sheet metal bridge piece carried right across the lamp, and it is obvious that the thrust of the magnet falling on this sharp corner with no elasticity is bound to cause the trouble in question, particularly when the pull of the magnet is accentuated by fast driving over indifferent roads. If the vertical web were cleared away from the main bracket for a length of ½" at the end where the bracket is secured, then considerably increased elasticity would result, and the shock of operating the magnet would be softened when transferred to the bracket instead of as it is at the moment, concentrated on practically a point.

Yours faithfully,
FOR ROLLS-ROYCE, LIMITED,

BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer}

TECHNICAL PRODUCTION ENGINEER.
