Rolls-Royce, Ltd., Derby. Dear Mr. Robotham, [Handwritten: Your ref. H/RM.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} 4/KT.] I was very glad to receive your letter of November 16th and to learn that our fate is not yet sealed as regards standardisation in the Bentley. Mr. West has spoken to me on the telephone about the proposal to use our aero type 773-S for your next test and I am quite agreed to this. However, I know you will appreciate that the type 773 is designed for hot aero engine conditions and in use in the Bentley car it will probably run so cool as to be in danger of oiling up. In view of this possibility we are making up a dozen plugs with the same construction of centre, but with a rather increased gas capacity in order to increase their resistance to oil and fouling from lead deposit. These cannot be ready for two or three days so presumably you will make a start on the standard 773 first. We are always anxious to prevent any confusion which may arise through the use of aero plugs in motor cars so that, should a plug of this type satisfy your requirements, I would propose to alter the external appearance and give it a different name in order to keep it quite distinct as a car plug. Kind regards, Yours sincerely, [Signature] | ||
