Re: Broken Valve Spring - Bentley B-114-HK.{Col. T. Harker - Sales}

The spring covered by Mr. Hancock's memo. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/G.W.H.S/J.H.4.12.36 (returned to Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Swdll.) has been examined.

The cause of fracture is a longitudinal, oxidised flaw extending from end to end of the spring.

Two specimens, comprising two or three coils from each end of the spring, are sent herewith. Both of these have been stripped, and one has been given a pickling test to open up the flaw. You will note that this is deeper in some parts than others, so that it may not have extended to the end of the coil, which would account for it not being found in the routine test.

As however it was fitted as early as March of this year, it must have been made prior to the date on which testing of both ends of each coil was introduced.

Two specimens att.
