SS.{S. Smith} EXHAUST SYSTEM.

Herewith we send N.schs. 2823/4/5, which have been made in accordance with R1/M30.1.29, R3/M30.1.29 and R4/M3.2.29. There are a number of experiments shewn on these three drgs.

N.sch.2823 shews the front expansion box with a stay to the engine crankcase, the box being constructed of a tube with pressed ends.

N.sch.2825 shews the box made up with various welded joints as R.{Sir Henry Royce} asks for. Which of these forms of construction is the best appears to us to be entirely a matter for the Works as regards cost, convenience etc.

N.sch.2825 also shews a longitudinal stay which R.{Sir Henry Royce} has also asked for us an alternative, but we think that it will be preferred to use the triangular stay on N.sch.2823.

N.sch.2824 shews the intermediate expansion box and rear silencer in two forms, the lower one being that asked for last, and therefore we expect is the one that should be first tried.

There are several alternatives of sliding joint. R.{Sir Henry Royce} seems keen on a plain sliding joint as indicated on the main lower view. We are rather doubtful whether this will be entirely successful, and think we prefer a spherical joint. Here again however we think it would be desirable to try the straight joint first. We are hoping that the front pressing and the pipe can be made in staybright, and we should be interested to hear whether this is so. Is there difficulty in welding staybrite on to ordinary mild steel?
