I have received your wire - "Investigate Phantom steering complaints made by Paris - We are sending by air mail weaker side steering tube springs for you to test on Phantom complained of - Hives*".

Our trouble with the rear axle was due to the failure of the thrust race G.50722 and G.50700. The balls had cut into the races and balls damaged which caused back lash in the gearing. We have been able to replace them and axle is now built up.

I took the opportunity to examine the O.S. rear spring and upon dismantling the 5th. leaf it was found to be cracked half way across; the other leaves were O.K. We have replaced the spring by a new one and have instructed Paris to send both rear springs back to you.

It looks very much as if the centre leaves go first which then increases the load the top leaf has to carry, which causes the failure.

We have dismantled the bottom half of the crankcase and replaced a gudgeon locking pin in No.5 cylinder which I stated in a report had come out. We found that the cause was as I reported that the locking pin thread being stiffer due to the gudgeon pin holes being out of line with the holes in piston and in forcing the pin in the threads, had been stripped.
